Are You Prepared?

Not to be doom and gloom in the midst of the holidays but as I was searching for emergency items to take on our road trip tomorrow, I came across this disastrous site. 72hours.org provides essential information on the supplies you’ll need in case of a variety of disasters. It states that after a major disaster, it is unlikely that emergency response services will be able to immediately respond to everyone’s needs, so it’s important to be prepared to take care of yourself and your family i.e. plan to be on your own for at least the first 72 hours. You name it, they’ll walk you through it – earthquake, storm/flooding, no power, fire, etc.

But back to the car guide – Real Simple and Christine Columbus both provide  great emergency lists for road trips. Now with a healthy dose of paranoia, I’m off to pack. Oh and if Santa wants to get me the Life Hammer: Car Escape Tool, I think I’ll sleep a little sounder

The Gift of Organization

Today’s post is totally shameless and self promoting but practical. A friend asked over the weekend if her mom could get her a gift certificate from Life Simplified to help her clean and organize her office. “Of course” was my enthusiastic response because unlike others, I have a unusual enjoyment of assisting and guiding others through the clutter and disorganization in their lives.

Take a moment to check out the services section on the Life Simplified site and you’ll find additional information regarding:

  • Tailored Gift Shopping
  • Media/Photo Projects
  • Home & Business Organization
  • Small Business Support
  • Research

I’ll be happy to do a gift certificate for any of these services for you or someone on your holiday list. Ho! Ho! Ho!

New York State of Mind

If you have someone on your holiday list that LOVES their home-state, here are a few items that I’ve seen this year that I love. Personally, I’ve already gifted myself this state necklace where you can personalize and pinpoint your hometown with a star. For you Kentucky fans, notice that I wear it with the  appropriate shade of blue. Found at signals and currently on sale. For those of you that like a little more bling (and have a bigger budget) check out State of Mine.

What I’m hoping to see under my tree this year is this fun and functional state-shaped cutting board. Here’s my current state of Missouri and I love that you can choose from 3 sizes. Uncommongoods also has a great array of state and city gifts from plates to dish towels. No matter what your state of mind is this holiday season, there’s plenty of great goodies to be found.

3 months or 3000 miles

Do you have trouble remembering to change the oil in your car or do other regularly scheduled maintenance? Driverside.com is a new free site that will automatically remind you, plus ballpark the repair costs for your vehicle. I first heard about this new site from Clark Howard on HLN who provides great tips on how to “save more, spend less & avoid getting ripped off”.

After a simple registration process of adding my vehicle, it provided detailed information regarding what would be upcoming in regards to “scheduled maintenance” and also provided information about any safety recalls.  While I’d like to trust my local garage to have my best interest at heart, it’s nice to have a back-up to double check their recommendations and “ballpark” out potential repairs.  There’s an especially great section that I have yet to tap into called “Ask Our Auto Mechanics – We pay for their advice so you don’t have to”.

For someone like me who abhors dealing with any car issues, this allows me to feel a little more in control.

Fun & Fancy foodie stuff

Whether you are hosting a holiday gathering in your own abode or wanting to bring something out of the ordinary to your next fete, these are a few of my favorites that are sure to delight.

No one will touch the chips & salsa once they see the delicious four cheese honey flight from terrain. Honey lovers will enjoy tasting this delicious honey variety consisting of blueberry, buckwheat, sourwood and sweet yellow clover all with suggested cheese pairings.

Phat Beets, Mean Beans, Smokra, The People’s Pickle, and new Hotties from Rick’s Picks are perfect when you want to make an impression with quick, healthy, and delicious hors d’oeuvres. Try pairing them with cheeses and cured meats,  eat them straight out of the jar & use the delicious brine in your cocktails!

For a light and playful addition, pick up these  gourmet spiced lollipops from this charming candy on etsy. The flavors of  Pistachio-Marshmallow, tongue-tingling Teaberry,  decadent Nutmeg-Crème and Hazelnut Coffee will have adults arguing over who gets which one.

No evening would be complete without something sweet so put out a batch of Vosges‘ Bacon Caramel Toffee and watch it disappear. Made with buttery bacon toffee with smoked salt, in deep 45% milk chocolate, absolute heaven.
